Articles Unctad and Urbis constructing a fairer world Just as Unctad, Urbis 2004 is a great opportunity to involve large cities in the debate that shall contribute for the construction of a fairer world RUBENS RICUPERO XI United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad XI) will be held at Anhembi Convention Center, in São Paulo, Brazil, from June 13 to 18 2004. Unctad, the UN forum for the discussion of development issues regarding trade, finance, investment and technology, holds its ministerial conference every four years to establish priorities and lines of action. The conference is Unctad’s highest decision instance and also includes a top notch debate on issues related to the economy and development. In addition to the conference, Anhembi’s Exhibit Pavilion in São Paulo, will host an expressive set of events, including fairs and congresses for small and medium sized companies, technologies, investments, creative industries, solidary market, among other activities. In face of the latest global news and the increasing difficulties in the international trade system, Unctad XI acquires, therefore, additional significance approaching essential issues in contemporaneous economic reality, which involves all peoples and nations and once again puts the development issue in the core of debates. For Brazil, which is taking on an increasingly important role in the international scenario, and for the city of São Paulo, relationships with international agencies and global city networks are a priority issue. Hosting Unctad XI and Urbis 2004 at the same time is a remarkable opportunity to involve larger cities and metropolitan cities in the debate on development and thus contribute for the construction of a fairer and more cooperative world. Rubens Ricupero is general secretary for Unctad XI (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). |
